Returned to Ninemile Crossroads in Bledsoe County around 12:30 (EST) this afternoon to check in on the nesting Scissor Tailed Flycatchers. There are 3 young and they're getting ready to fledge. All three were out in the open begging, flexing their wings and fluttering around. First one fluttered up to a perch about a foot above the nest, then I could find only 2 and finally re-located the 3rd on a wire a couple feet below the nest. Both parents were nearby. The mailman did a U-turn in the road to ask me what was so interesting to look at. I handed him my binoculars and he was duly impressed. Said he'd never seen one of those birds before. One of the adults obligingly flew over the field giving him a great look at its spectacular tail. You'd think that if he drives down that road delivering mail every day he might have noticed one. When I left about 12:55 (Eastern Time) the three young were still out on the transformer, calling, hopping and fluttering around.
