Tomorrow (July 9) we will be running our MAPS (Monitoring Avian
Productivity and Survival) station at Seven Islands in Knox County. We
will set up a half an hour before sunrise at the second to the last
barn along the paved road (Kelly Lane) this Sunday. Nets will close
around 11:30am depending upon the temperature. If it rains, we will
reschedule. We have been catching about 40-50 birds each morning we are
out. Anyone who is interested in seeing the bird banding process is
invited. You do not have to show up at sunrise or stay the whole time.
 Bring lots of water.

Just in case you don't know, MAPS (Monitoring Avian Productivity and
Survival) is a national protocol for monitoring birds. We use a set of
ten mist nets in a contiguous patch of habitat. It was designed for
forest birds, but we have one of the few set up in a grassland setting.
Because we are in a grassland setting we have one of the highest
capture rates of any of the MAPS stations. If you want the to see birds
like Indigo Buntings, Yellow-breasted Chats, and Field Sparrows up
close and have a chance to see maybe a Grasshopper Sparrow or a
Prothonotary Warbler, this is the station to visit. This project is
conducted in cooperation with the Seven Islands Foundation, The
Knoxville Chapter of the TOS, THe Knoxville Zoo, and The Department of
Forestry, Wildlife and Fisheries at the University of Tennesseen and
was originally funded by a TOS Conservation and Research Grant.

Information and directions to Seven Islands are available on the TOS
website (http://www.tnbirds.org/birdfinding/SevenIslands.htm).

Yesterday I had 27 Wood Ducks at the new wetland area, and I had a
Black-and-white Warbler along the river.
