Greetings from the Charlotte Park section of West Nashville where some of the birds have returned since my arrival home from the hospital, physical therapy rehab.and a stay in assisted living. The best bird after my welcome home goldfinches is a chipping sparrow that MAY have stayed the winter. One was here before I left home January 10, so it might possibly be the same one. Cowbirds have been back for a week. Hope they don't take over the cardinal nests as they did last year. Seven cardinal couples nested close last year, and only one very late baby cardinal was produced. They all fed baby cowbirds. Aaaargh! Mourning doves, house finches, chickadees, titmice, towhees, Carolinas, common grackles, house sparrows, cardinals, blue jays, one junco and my bossy mocks have all returned, and a flicker is hanging around my back yard trees. The starlings are nesting in knotholes in my hackberry trees.....already. I THINK one pair is feeding young, At least, they are carrying food. Rock pigeons have started flying over, so they'll land and send me into poverty when they realize there is a constant food supply. Some warblers were in the tree tops this AM, but my binoculars were in the car, couldn't see them well, and they didn't sing. Missed ID'ing them. Starving squirrels are making up for my absence by filling up! They can sure put the food away! I could use fewer of them.
