Ensley Bottoms in Memphis TN ( 07-31-02 ) I set up my new spotting scope on the shoulder of Riverport Road and saw some Mallards, four Wood Ducks, and two pretty impressive Americain Widgeons. Then Jeff Wilson drove up. I spent an hour birding with him in the Pits. It was amazing. First, he showed me a mother Coyote protecting her cubs. Then we drove to the Pits. Here is a list of birds that he pointed out to me. Stilt Sandpipers Solitary Sandpiper Semi-palmated Plovers Black-necked Stilts Semi-palmated Sandpipers Red Phalarope ( white male ) Short-billed Dowitcher Lesser Yellowlegs Eastern Kingbirds Loggerhead Shrike Yellow Billed Cuckoo Painted Bunting Barn Swallows Canada Geese Mourning Doves Indigo Buntings Mockingbirds Cardinal Green Heron Great Blue Heron Great Egret Red-tailed Hawk Kestrel plus a lot of other birds which I cannot remember. Jeff Wilson is easily the most impressive birder I have ever met. I really enjoyed spending an hour birding with him. And my new Nikon Scope works great!
