Sept. 17-18-19, 2010 Shelby Co. TN Arkabutla Lake, MS At the North Treatment Plant, a lot of shorebirds moved through on a cold front with a Black-bellied Plover, new for that location this season, counted along with 13 other Wind Bird species. A Peregrine and a Cooper's Hawk hunted the area also keeping the birds on the alert, On the Mississippi River a first year Bald Eagle lounged on a sandbar most of the weekend and Caspian, Forster's and a Common Tern passed by along with several Ring-billed Gulls and a few strings of DC Cormorants. At Ensley, on Friday, they had flooded three flats which attracted lots of birds but the water did not last long. Lesser Yellow-legs dropped in for short rests with a total of 19 counted plus 1 Stilt Sandpiper and among the hordes of Least were a sprinkling of Semipalmated Sandpipers, Pectoral Sandpipers, 2 Semipalmated Plovers, 2 Western and 3 Baird's that were present on Sunday. A single American Golden-Plover was seen and photographed in the grassy fields just north of the "Pits". 18 species of Wind Birds were counted spread about my birding trek over the weekend. At Mud Lake, 2 Wood Storks, no White Ibis but 9 Forster's, 1 Black and 2 Caspian Terns. At Arkabutla Lake, a hopeful vigil for a possible Jaeger or two, proved unproductive in that but did produced a couple of dozen White Pelicans, 260 plus Ring-billed Gulls, a first year Laughing Gull plus 9 Forster's Terns. A starving juvenile Mississippi Kite was found in Germantown, TN and delivered to a rehabber in MS and is doing great but will have to be ferried in a few weeks down to the coast to catch up with its cousins in migration.
