[TN-Bird] Re: American Coot, Big Bald (just into NC)

Probably a bird grounded by weather while migrating over the mountains. I saw a number of dead coots in the road on Nov 9, 1991 above Gatlinburg leading up to the Ski Slopes at Ober Gatlinburg.

I once found a coot under a porch at a house near Hickory Ridge Mall in Memphis.

My colleague Chris Kelly with North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission photographed an Am. Coot in the woods around Big Bald, N Cherokee NF, just on the NC side. I thought many of you would find this as interesting as I did. You just never know with birds!

Here is her note:

I've just returned from a week in the field and would like to share a
noteworthy bird sighting: On Sunday, October 23, 2011, ~6:45PM, my
coworkers, volunteers, and I found a wayward American coot hiding
under a spruce tree at the edge of a dirt parking area for Big Bald
(Yancey County, NC) when we were finishing up some other wildlife
survey work in the area. There are usually two ruffed grouse that
hide out under the same spruce tree where the coot was hiding. This
area is characterized as northern hardwood forest (beech, sugar maple,
northern red oak, yellow birch, hawthorne) with scattered conifers.
Elevation at the parking area is about 5200ft. It was gone when we
returned early the next morning and I did not see it any other
mornings this week.

Cheers,
Scott Somershoe
