Weekend of 27 and 28 March 2010 .=: R E F L E C T I O N Q U E S T I O N S :-. The Scriptures for this weekend are found here: http://www.nccbuscc.org/nab/ What lead to the quick change from shouts of "Hosanna, hosanna" to "Crucify him, crucify him!?" In what ways do we deny knowing Jesus? What are the human emotions Jesus went through? Are there any human emotions he didn't experience? How much would we have to love someone in order for us to give our life for them? Who would we give our lives for? If we are called to walk in the footsteps of Jesus, how would that change the way we are called to live our lives? How are these Scriptures comforting? Challenging? .=: S P I R I T U A L R E F L E C T I O N :=. Today we take palms to our homes. We replace those that were burned in preparation for Lent. On Ash Wednesday their ashes were traced on our foreheads as we heard the words, "Remember that you are dust, and that to dust you shall return." As Jesus receives a king's welcome to his city, the crowd pulls branches from the trees and carpets his path with them as they shout, "Hosanna, Hosanna!" How quickly the cries of "Hosanna, Hosanna" turn to "Crucify him, crucify him!" In this most holy week we experience the highest and lowest of human emotions. From victory to betrayal, from love to hate, from courage to fear, they're all there. We are called to gather often this week, as God's people. On Thursday we begin the Sacred Triduum, the three most sacred days of the year. On Thursday morning at 10 a.m., Bishop Harrington, retired Bishop of the Winona Diocese will gather with the priests of our Diocese at Saint Joseph the Workman Cathedral, or the Cathedral of your Diocese as oils are blessed and Chrism is consecrated. It's a day of priesthood. Only the Mass of Chrism and the Mass of the Lord's Supper may be celebrated this day. No funeral Masses may be celebrated on Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday or Easter Sunday. Lent officially ends with the beginning of the Mass of the Lord's Supper at on Holy Thursday. The Holy Oils are presented to the Parish and placed in our Ambry. Feet are washed as we remember the simple service Jesus provided for his disciples. He calls us to wash one another's feet as well! Extra hosts are consecrated tonight, to be used for our Good Friday Service. We spend time this night in adoration of the Most Holy Eucharist. On Good Friday we gather to remember Jesus death on the Cross. It's the only day of the year Mass may not be celebrated. We venerate the cross and receive the Eucharist consecrated the night before. The tabernacle remains empty. On Saturday night, after dark, we begin the granddaddy of all vigils, the Vigil of Easter. We begin in darkness. We light the Easter Fire and the new Easter Candle, we sing the Exsultet by candle light. We hear the *A* word being sung once more! We bless the Easter water. It's a wonderful night, indeed. On Easter we gather at the regular Mass times to celebrate the most important thing we believe as Christian people, that Jesus has risen from the dead. There will be Baptisms and Confirmations at the Easter Vigil as well. Holy Week is the most *wonderful* week of the year. Try to be there for all of it. Have a good week! (c)MMX Fr. Pat Umberger.
