[THIN] USERINIT hangs - users get a blank screen when logging on (no shell).

G'day,

I've just spent a couple of hours remotely troubleshooting and fixing this
little problem on a couple of MetaFrame servers, so I thought I'd share the
fix so that others don't get caught...

Symptom: Users successfully enter their username & password to any of the
sites Metaframe servers, the Usrlogon scripts run, but they're then left
with a blank screen. It appears that the shell (Explorer) isn't being
started by Userinit. Opening the task manager (Ctrl F1) and starting
Explorer from there successfully starts the shell. Task manager shows
Userinit as still running.

Cause: Several of the font entries in the registry
(HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version\Fonts) were UNC paths to
a server that had failed. Userinit gets stuck trying to get a connection to
IPC$ on the failed server to load the fonts.

Fix: Copy the font files to the Citrix servers and update the registry
entries to point to the local location. Funnily enough, users can not only
log on properly, but the logon also happens faster than before. :-)

This is a "gotcha" for doing a client install of some software that requires
a server install on a file server and a client install on the Citrix
servers. These particular systems must've been running for years like
this...
