MDAC 2.8 when installed on our W2K SP4 computers caused issues with several
applications (Adobe, Office XP, a third party grading tool), I could not
wait to get it off the server.

Are you getting a particular error with your MDAC? There should be no reason
why you would have to use a lower version. I have an ERP application that I
thought was MDAC version specific but turned out that it wasnt after some
testing and setup issues. I have spent hours on this and try to fix weird
errors related to MDAC.
