Hi Collin,
How easy this is depends on whether you've got a domain or not. In a
non-domain scenario, I'd just clone the second machine off the first, make a
bootable backup copy of the OS on the second machine (robocopy and regback)
and then rename the second machine and change it's IP address.

Eg.

On machine 2

Robocopy \winnt \winback /sec /mir /r:1 /w:1
Cd \winback\system32\config
Regback .

Modify boot.ini, copy last line, change \winnt to \winback, add "backup" to
text portion of line.

Now change the machine name and IP address.

This will let you boot into winback simply by rebooting the second machine
and selecting the right (winback) boot directory). Since the winback OS has
the original machine's name and IP adress etc this will give you DR server.

In a domain scenario, you will have to use newsid as well as re-entering the
domain, but since this only adds another reboot, it wouldn't be too bad.

Having said all that, with the number of users you're like to have, wouldn't
upgrading to load balancing (1.8 + lb, or XPs to Xpa) give you a more
satisfactory solution?

Rick

That doesn't sound like what I am talking about, this is from a Disaster
recovery standpoint, there will not be an opportunity to remove this server
from a farm since it has crashed. What I want to do is replace the crashed
server, in this case Metaframe2, with a spare server. I want to put the
spare server online, give it the same name and IP as the crashed server and
know if it will be seamless to the users.

Can this be done?

Thanks,

Collin White

Hello everyone: Is it possible to rename a Metaframe Server? For Example I
have a Windows 2000 SP2 Metaframe XP FR1 Server called Metaframe2, I just
built another server the same configuration and it is called Metaframe. Is
it possible to take Metaframe2 offline, put Metaframe Online, change it's IP
address to the same as Metaframe2, and then rename it to Metaframe2. Will
this work? I ask because I would like to use this as a disaster recovery
procedure, server crashes, put a spare online.

Thanks,

Collin White
