Can you point me to something that explains the swing method, in case it's
not one I've come across. We aren't yet sure if we're migrating to 2000 or
2003. We're licensed for 2000 and there may not be enough in the pot to move
to 2003. Also, our DCs are all currently 2000 and I suspect they may need to
be 2003 for Exhange 2003.

Swing migration is the way to go IMO. I did 2 and had zero problems
doing it. It's very easy and straight forward and it's the most
recommended method. Even if you didn't have new, dedicated hardware,
you can use something as basis as a high end desktop as your swing
server, throwing in a cheapo $100 RAID card and a few IDE HDDs for some
security.

Well, there is no direct upgrade from 5.5 to 2003 so rule that out.
If it were me, I would look at installing the new server into the domain
and do a swing migration. Microshaft had a migration document out a
while back that you may want to look for. It had several recommendations
and scenarios that may help you decide the way that you want to do. It
does help to know if you are doing 2003 or 2000.
