Hence the reason why I uninstalled SP2.

Ran out of time trying to get SP2 to work with MSAM and disabling Firewall 
didn't make any difference.

Actually, I had already disabled the firewall service, and the
problem did not go away.  We found a Microsoft KB article outlining
this issue, and a link to the hotfix to download from MS.

I have downloaded this hotfix, and this resolved the issue.  I am
very surprised that no one has every heard of this problem.  I guess
not many companies are deploying SP2 for Windows XP.
