Ok, this is Gabe a.k.a. Steve from Humanware (yeah, right)! It sounds like this is a software issue. I would recommend performing a profile reset. The profile reset will cause you to lose any bookmarks you have created and you will lose your place in any books you are currently reading. In order to perform the profile reset start with your stream turned off and the SD card removed. Then, hold down the bookmark button and the number 5 button along with the power button. When you hear the beep of it coming on let go of all three buttons. You should hear a message about creating new profile and then the welcome to victor reader message. When you hear the welcome message you can insert your SD card and it should now be working properly. Take my advice, if you dare, I don't use it anyway. The tech told me if that didn’t solve the problem to call them back, and then, he added parantheticaly, “Oh, also, I forgot to mention that your bookmarks won’t be there either.” That irritated and rattled me a bit. I asked if there were any other things changed I needed to know about, and he said he didn’t think so, but since then, I have discovered other settings that I had to reset, like the date and time, and I also had to change the clock from 24 hour setting back to 12 hour setting, etc. Ron From: the-facts-machine-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:the-facts-machine-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Richard McKinley Sent: Monday, March 23, 2015 10:50 AM To: the-facts-machine@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [the-facts-machine] Re: Victor Reader Stream How do you do a profile reset? So far, it doesn’t seem to just shut down on its own so maybe that is resolved. However, I’m not 100% certain. Now, when I delete a podcast subscription, it locks up my VR Stream, and I have to turn it off and then, re-boot it. I don’t think it was doing that before the Humanware tech guy had me do a profile reset. I have automatic updates turned on, but as suggested, I think I’ll turn that off and just check from time to time for updates. Besides, usually someone here tells us when there are updates. No power is needed to preserve information stored. Another possability that occured to me regarding how your stream is behaving, might involve updates. Do you have automatic updating turned on? If it detects that an update is available, it might just be performing a download and install. Usually it prompts you to have the stream plugged in when an update is going to take place. I purchased 2 batteries with my new stream, and alternate using them about every 2 weeks. One thing I notice when taking the battery out for a longer period of time, I lost my podcast srbscriptions, and saved radio favorites. You can save these lists of subscriptions and radio feeds to the SD card. If you do this, you can restore them if they are lost. Just use the 7 key while you are on-line, and advance through the menues there until you reach the "save subscriptions," or update sellection. You can toggle automatic updating on or off. I prefer to have it off, and choose the best time to do updates. If your stream is still under warrantee, and keeps doing what you describe, I would contact Humanware about the problem. The first streem I bought started crashing on me after one year, and they wouldn't do anything about it because the warrentee had expired. They told me it would cost more to fix it than it would to buy a new one. When talking with their support about the problems I was having with the Victor stream, they had me try a three button key combination to reset the stream. I don't remember what numbers or buttons they told me to hold down all at the same time to perform a complete reset. Doing this erased all my keys, and didn't fix the problem. The first Victor stream I baught several years ago was never dropped. It was always handeled carefully. It started showing intermittent problems within months after I bought it. But not often enough. I thought it might be a bad battery, so baught another one. The new battery helped for a while, but then it started crashing again. By that time its warranty was expired. The Victor Stream is a well designed product, but Humanware does sell an occasional lemmon. And when they do, they didn't seem very motivated to make it right. Hope you let us know how things turn out for you. Michael G ----- Original Message ----- From: Dr. Ronald E. My VR Stream just shuts down sometimes on its own. By shut down, I mean it just stops working, but it does not completely shut off. The little green light is still on indicating it is still powered up, but otherwise, it is completely dead. There is absolutely nothing I can do to bring it back to life, except just wait for it to completely turn off, and then, I can boot it up, and it will work just fine again. This shut down most often happens when I am going through the status menu to see how much battery charge is left or if it is downloading any podcasts, how much memory I have left, etc. However, yesterday I was listening to a Ham Nation podcast and it just shut down. Again, when I say shut down, I do not mean it turns completely off by powering down. The little green light is still on, indicating it is still powered up. It just stops functioning. Anyone else having this problem? Ron
