Hi, all!

Pat Heirs, Joyce Davidson, and I headed out to the Island this morning for
a last crack at spring migration, and it was gorgeous day with some nice
birds! Highlights at Sheepshead included a singing Bell's Vireo and two
knockout Bay-breasted Warblers, Yellow-breasted Chat, Veery, Black-chinned
Hummingbird (a nice male, my first for the island), and a cooperative
Chestnut-sided Warbler (three Western Tanagers were also seen by others). Pat
spotted a snoozing Common Nighthawk in the mesquite.

At the Convention Centre a late Ruby-crowned Kinglet greeted us, and a
soaring Anhinga was also a first for my SPI list! The trees had lots of
Indigo and Painted Buntings (mostly females but a couple of males as well),
Redstarts, a skulky Ovenbird, Magnolia Warblers, several Rose-breasted
Grosbeaks, Yellow-headed Blackbirds in with the cowbirds, and a Gray-cheeked
Thrush. Several orioles were about including one we assumed was the reported
female Bullock's, but it also showed characteristics of a first-year
Baltimore, so comments are welcome (pictures on the website, see below)!

Out on the "back porch" a group of Wilson's Phalaropes poking around with
some Sanderlings (also a first), a couple of Dunlin, and a Short-billed
Dowitcher. Sharp-eyed Pat found us a Least Bittern on the boardwalk, and
Linda Butcher reported a Blackburnian Warbler that we missed, but we did find
her Eastern Kingbird along with a couple of Westerns, plus a knockout Scarlet
Tanager! A Redhead was pretty late. We also ran into the rest of the
Harlingen contingent of the Birder Patrol consisting of Norma, Cheryle, and
Sue, along with my friend Tony Merceica from San Diego! A Wilson's and
Semipalmated Plover together were nice, but not much on the beach except the
usual (although we did have a fly-by Oystercatcher).

On the way out we stopped along a couple of side roads, where a Willow
Flycatcher was calling.

Pictures of the more cooperative birds and a recording of the Bell's Vireo
are here:
