Early morning often has good numbers of hawks perched up looking for
breakfast or trying to dry after rain or heavy dew at and near Candy
Abshier. Cooper's hawks are actually hunting well before actual sunrise and
can be found on stubs out in the marsh as well as woods. This bird was sort
of waking up and hunting.

It is attaining adult plumage but the eye is not full red yet. It was not
really alert as a local collared dove flew right in front of it but
alertness only came after the fact.

And either disdained the photographer or had an itchy nose

A nearby broad-winged hawk posed as a mystery bird

It had food or a pellet on the post but was looking for more

The injury to one eye did not seem to really disable it

One of the local young red-shouldered hawks has been playing cat and mouse
with the local bobwhites

The bobwhites are alert but have been dived on

And do a lot of pushing to see who gets most of the food

Ospreys have no trouble getting fish in the bay, usually mullet. This
osprey has a very full crop

Most Mississippi kites are already south of here but a few go by most days.
They are out early in the am feeding and dragonflying before heading over
the bay.

Saturday had my first actual kettles and strings of broad-winged hawks for
the year

Dead dragonflies on the tower ramps kill themselves by darting into the
wires on ramp sides. Bats also have a problem with wires like this
migrating or local bat that hung itself on the bobwire.

And the famous horned owl has returned to Hawkins Camp road in much better
feather than in past years.

Still no real cold fronts this year. I sort of remember the latest good
front in past years in Texas as October 8 but they think that this year the
first one will arrive after October 28. Really need a good north wind that
has vigor but does not have to be one that sends the portapotty flying
toward the bay.
