D.D. Currie and Dell Little led a Tyler Audubon field trip today to the north unit of Richland Creek WMA, off Hwy 287, in Freestone and Navarro counties. Note that the area is closed till later this month, but we were able to obtain access today only. The wetlands have been greatly expanded and habitat is fantastic for dabbling ducks and shorebirds. We had 18 species of waterfowl, including a cooperative Ross's Goose, a Canvasback, 3 Redheads, 5 Greater Scaup, and impressive numbers of common species (1300 Northern Pintails, 1200 Northern Shovelers, 900 Gadwall, 300 Green-winged Teal, 200 Ruddy Ducks, 50 American Wigeons). These are likely substantial underestimates, as we grew simply tired out from counting the birds, which were everywhere. We also had 12 Bald Eagles, 4,000 American Coots, 450 Greater Yellowlegs, 500+ Long-billed Dowitchers, 300 Least Sandpipers, 50 Wilson's Snipe and 20 American Avocets. Lingering landbirds included a male Yellow Warbler and a Blue-Gray Gnatcatcher. Thanks to D.D. and Dell for showing us these new areas of the WMA. Come visit when it reopens.
