Evening All,
This is just a bit of follow up with the list of the better birds, their
numbers, and locations. Definitely a great day to be out although I'm
pretty sure it felt more like mid spring than January. The shear number of
birds at San Luis Pass this afternoon was outstanding, with all species
combined there were probably at least 10,000 individual birds in the
immediate area.

Redhead - 3520 for the day with 3420 at San Luis Pass
Greater Scaup - 1 at San Luis Pass and 8 off of East Beach (confirmed by
wing pattern in flight)
Lesser Scaup - daily total of > 130
Bufflehead - 60, including 44 at Sportsman's Rd.
Common Goldeneye - 1 male at Sportsman's Rd.
Hooded Merganser - 14 Surfside
Ruddy Duck - 275
Common Loon - 12 Sportsman's Road
Eared Grebe -1 Quintana Area
Merlin - 1
White Tailed Kite - 13 for the day
Wilson's Plover - 6 San Luis Pass, certainly not very common on the UTC in
winter
Piping Plover - 12 San Luis Pass
American Oystercatcher - 30 for the day including 23 at Sportsman's Road
American Avocet - 220 at San Luis Pass
Marbled Godwit - 30
Long Billed Curlew - 40 San Luis Pass
Wilson's Snipe - 15
Wilson's Phalarope - 1 Quintana Spoil Site
Bonaparte's Gull - 2, 1 at Surfside and 1 at East Beach
Lesser Black Backed Gull - 2 Quintana
Black Skimmer ~ 320 for the day, most at San Luis Pass
5 Warbler Species - Orange Crowned, A. Redstart (the overwintering Quintana
bird), Pine, Common Yellowthroat, and Yellow Rumped
Golden Crowned Kinglet

Good Birding,

John Tharp
Houston, TX
