Today, I ventured into the rain to show Mike Kelly, a birder from Virginia
visiting the Austin area, around Granger Lake. I saw the Whooping Cranes
flying over Sore Finger WMA a mere 3 minutes before he met up with me, and
we couldn't refind them after that. Bummer! Also, we couldn't seem to find
any longspurs or Mountain Plovers, but birds were still around. Good
numbers of Horned Larks were out, with about 10 around where Aubrey Messer
Rd. hits 487, and another 15-20 on CR 352. Definitely the highlight of the
day was the Prairie Falcon on Alligator Rd., even neater that it had a bird
(I think it was a meadowlark) in its talons, and it landed on a fence post
and started ripping feathers off. Photo of the falcon here:

also had good success with sparrows at Friendship park. Two very
cooperative LeConte's Sparrows gave great looks...I guess they didn't want
to forage down in the tall, wet grass while it was raining, because they
sat up on unobstructed perches without even flushing!
Good Birding,
Sam Fason, Austin.
