A nippy morning did not inhibit bird activity. It was noisy all morning, and quite exciting. Robin Doughty joined me, after a flock of Cedar Waxwings flew over and one Great Blue Heron flew into the laguna. White-winged Doves were roosting/feeding more than flying over the lake. A couple Pied-billed Grebes and a bunch of Mallards were in the laguna. Two Eastern Phoebes briefly chased each other and American Goldfinches were all around with Yellow-rumped Warblers. Had a scene near the end with both Red-bellied and Downy Woodpeckers (two mating pairs) chasing each other around with a Carolina Chickadee and Black-crested Titmouse in the mix. Also, a flock of Blue Jays scared up one Barred Owl, another was at the regular roost, but not sure if it was the same individual. Managed to get a Swamp Sparrow to respond to tape, and the male Common Yellowthroat to pishing off the peninsula. Bird of the day was a Forster's Tern heading north on the lake. Robin Doughty told me that 37 was his highest count for a winter walk (previously 36). So naturally I wrote down a list of more that I would not have been surprised to see this morning...biggest let down being Great-tailed Grackle! http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S12634975 Elliott M.
