Here is what was in my original post that somehow did not make it through: Went in search of Kites and Fish Crows today. Got to see both Kites in Crosby and the Fish Crows in Deussen Park. First headed to Crosby for the Kites. One Mississippi Kite perched in a tree as we headed into the Newport subdivision. First actual stop was at the park on Port 0 Call street, where we saw no kites. Then headed to the park with the nature trail on S. Diamondhead. Three different spottings of a MIKI - no way to tell if it was the same one three times. We did have a pair of kingbirds - perhaps Couches - and three sp of woodpeckers - Pileated, Red-headed and Red-bellied, and a couple of vireos. We then looked along the roads in hopes of Swallow-tailed Kites, but nothing there. Decided to take one more look at the small P-O-C street park. Glad we did. One very good look at a STKI - dining in mid-air. Then we noticed a small group of MIKIs (mix of juv. and adult). Six in all. As a Red-shouldered Hawk passed through, the MIKI's really dove after it and chased it away. By then, another three MIKIs had joined them. Just when we thought the show was over, a Turkey Vulture passed through, and the chase was on once again. The kites won. After Crosby, we went to Deussen Park to search for the Fish Crows. We found a small group of them at the pumping station, and another single one over by the boat ramp. Bonus at Deussen/Eisenhower park was singing Summer Tanagers.
