After a long week of exams and a long Friday morning of post-exam meetings,
I ambled out of work a little early yesterday, slipping away to bird
Hockley County from 1:30 to 7:30.
I was hoping that the heavy rains of Thursday and cool and cloudy
conditions overnight would have dropped a few migrant songbirds in the
county - mostly so that I could get one last shot at photographing a
MacGillivray's Warbler. My hopes were dashed vis-a-vis songbirds but
shorebirds seem to be going through a second wave.
Highlights included 12 Blue-winged Teals north of Levelland, 6 Blue-winged
Teals at Roundup Playa, 12 Blue-winged Teals south of Smyer, 8 Cinnamon
Teals north of Levelland, 2 Canvasbacks south of Smyer, 6 Redheads along FM
2646, 5 Redheads south of Smyer, 2 Ring-necked Ducks at Brashears Park, 2
Eared Grebes north of Levelland, 2 Black-necked Stilts near Whitharral, 16
American Avocets near Whitharral, 12 American Avocets at Roundup Playa, 26
American Avocets south of Smyer, 20 Stilt Sandpipers south of Smyer, 5
Least Sandpipers north of Levelland, 8 Least Sandpipers at Roundup Playa, 9
Least Sandpipers south of Roundup, 28 Long-billed Dowitchers north of
Levelland, 2 Wilson's Snipes south of Roundup, 1 Spotted Sandpiper at
Roundup Playa, 2 Greater Yellowlegs along FM 2646, 3 Greater Yellowlegs

South Plains College, 1 Spotted Towhee at the Foster x Hawk Roads Playa,
and 2 Yellow-headed Blackbirds at Roundup Playa.
This is probably the last weekend I have a shot at photographing some of
the species that I have seen, but not been able to photograph, in the
county including Common Poorwill, Broad-tailed Hummingbird, Cordilleran
Flycatcher, Black-and-white Warbler, MacGillivray's Warbler, Townsend's
Warbler, and Black-headed Grosbeak - and most, if not all, of these are
long shots. I am going for maximum effort tomorrow!
