Hello Texbirders,
On Friday morning I encountered a Louisiana Waterthrush in a yard on Sycamore
Street just north of downtown Brenham in Washington County. The waterthrush was
in a corner of the yard where there is heavy undergrowth. The sprinkler system
had just finished it's cycle in that portion of the yard and everything was
damp. The waterthrush chipped a few times then flew off. Friday. I also noted
my first southbound Orchard Orioles of the year on Sycamore Street. I heard
them in a water oak and had a quick glance at three birds. A mockingbird in the
neighborhood has added the call of a Couch's Kingbird to it repertoire. A
Couch's Kingbird spent about three weeks in the neighborhood earlier this year.

Saturday morning I birded a privately-owned property in the Peach Creek
Community in southern Brazos County. Except for the Indigo(10-12) and Painted
Buntings(8-10) singing vigorously, it was rather quiet on the property.I did
encounter a Common Yellowthroat singing on territory. The yellowthroat made a
complete circle around me and sang vigorously. I did not see a female, but the
habitat is perfect for a yellowthroat to nest. We do not have concrete evidence
of Common Yellowthroats nesting in the Central Brazos Valley, so it will be
worth checking this location again soon. A silent Prothonotary Warbler was
foraging nearby. Two Pileated Woodpeckers landed on a snag in the area and I
heard Red-headed Woodpeckers close by.

The property is holding water from heavy rains earlier this summer. I observed
3 Wood Ducks, a probable Mallard in flight, Great Blue Heron, 6-8 Great Egrets,
a Little Blue Heron, and a Wood Stork.

Closer to the Navasota River on the property I heard an Acadian Flycatcher, a
Red-eyed Vireo, a Yellow-throated Vireo, and a Summer Tanager sing very
briefly. Three to four Northern Parulas were singing on territory. By the time
I arrived in the area where Kentucky and Swainson's Warblers nest it was late
morning and very hot. Most everything had shut down for the day. An adult male
Orchard Oriole was chattering and foraging on trumpet creeper blossoms in the
Kentucky and Swainson's nesting area. I saw three migrating Orchard Orioles
earlier in the morning.
