Hi, all! The "Western Contingent" of the Birder Patrol (MJ Syvertsen, Pat Heirs, Joyce Davidson, and myself) headed out to Cannon Road this morning after reports of Yellow-green Vireo by the Brushes got our juices going! Dipped on the vireo, but we had nice encounters with common breeders in the NWR tract, including cooperative Groove-billed Anis. They've changed the entrance ramp to Adams Garden Reservoir on me once again (it's now on the northwest corner), but after finally finding it we had nice looks at a male Ruddy Duck not quite into breeding plumage, and several Least Sandpipers. The reservoir itself had gobs of cormorants, both whistling ducks, and over at the east end both night herons, several Green Herons, and tons of Bank Swallows swooping around. You can no longer circle the whole reservoir, so we ended up going north on an adventuresome dike where the best sighting was several juvenile Horned Larks that were very Sprague's Pipit-like! Coming back down Weaver Road the girls enjoyed the various stages of cotton along the road, and once at the sod farms about all we could pick out among the hordes of grackles were a couple of yellowlegs and some Killdeer. The "Rangerville Resaca" had several Black-necked Stilts jumping around like pogo sticks, along with a single Avocet and both flavors of yellowlegs together. After a quick look at the pond at the WMA we headed out by way of Jimenez Road and back down to 281. A quick stop at Zacatal yielded a gorgeous Roseate Spoonbill among the hordes of egrets, plus a Wood Stork for the year on the south side! Wrapped up with 68 species for the morning.
