Stimulated by David Wolf and Robert Truss finding 10 American Bitterns at
Alazan Bayou WMA last weekend, I spent three hours there this morning.
Large waterbirds were abundant, with 7 American Bitterns, at least 10
Little Blue Herons and 45 White Ibis. Shorebirds included 7 Greater and 20
Lesser Yellowlegs, 5 Pectoral and 1 Solitary Sandpiper.
I saw a Black-billed Cuckoo with 90% confidence, seeing it in flight over
water in good light. It had no chestnut in the wings and appeared to have
an all-black bill. If you drive all the way into the main part of the WMA
with all the water till the end and walk past the gate, the cuckoo was
about 200 yards past the parking area. The Bitterns were along a half-mile
stretch after the same parking area.

There were six species of swallows present, including 1 Cave and 1 Bank
Swallow. I also had 2 Northern Waterthrushes in the same area with the
Bitterns, both singing away.
