Yesterday at Post Park, ~5 miles south of Marathon, there was a smattering of migrants: Warbling Vireo, Wilson's Warbler, and a couple of Least Flycatchers. The thrust of hummingbird migration "seems" to have slowed down. However, I noticed a male Ruby-throated hummingbird at the feeders this morning. This is the second one (presumably) so far this Fall migration. We have had good turnover of Rufous/Allen's birds thus far. Olive-sided Flycatcher was seen hawking insects from atop a dead perch near one of the cottonwood crossings on "Post Road." It is always interesting out here in the Fall with the movement of Scissor-tailed Flycatchers through the area. The majority of them are young birds. So many sudden short tails. Any Blue Grosbeaks "seem" to be young birds wandering about. Bell's Vireo continues is proper habitat, Cassin's Sparrows have grown mostly silent/gone, though one may come across a bird infrequently and it is generally not singing. Several young Red-tailed Hawks have been conspicuously soaring about the Marathon Basin. Movement of orioles, particularly Bullock's and Scott's, have been entertaining. Otherwise, several yr-round resident species' Hatch Year birds are wandering about giving some enjoyable observations. cheers, Matt York (& Heidi Trudell) Marathon, Brewster Co. -- www.bigbendnature.com Edit your Freelists account settings for TEXBIRDS at //www.freelists.org/list/texbirds Reposting of traffic from TEXBIRDS is prohibited without seeking permission from the List Owner
