Yesterday (Sunday, 05/04/14) we sought shorebirds, primarily, at sod field areas, namely Progreso (Hidalgo Co.), La Feria and Weaver Road (both Cameron Co.), plus the Port Isabel Reservoir (Cameron Co.). Here are the shorebird result and a few other highlights. The shorebird species are listed this time in no particular order. Sites are listed in chronological order of visitation from earliest to latest. PROGRESO SOD FIELDS: GREATER YELLOWLEGS (1), LESSER YELLOWLEGS (est. 15-20, widely dispersed), PECTORAL SANDPIPER (est. 12-15, also widely dispersed, but almost always in watery areas, as usual), and BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER (37, at least, and this may be conservative). The Pectoral Sandpipers close enough to scrutinize carefully appeared all to be females, which were quite handsome, as per breeding condition). (Total shorebird species this site = 4.) LA FERIA SOD FIELD: AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER (2) WEAVER ROAD SOD FIELDS: BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER (1), BAIRD'S SANDPIPER (7), LEAST SANDPIPER (2), UPLAND SANDPIPER (1), and BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER (90, at least, for this may be a bit conservative). A nice surprise was WHITE-FACED IBIS (8). HORNED LARK seemed ubiquitous. (Total shorebird species this site = 5.) PORT ISABEL RESERVOIR: WILSON'S PLOVER (6), BLACK-NECKED STILT (3), WILLET (2, additional heard), SEMIPALMATED PLOVER (1), LESSER YELLOWLEGS (7), WHIMBREL (17), STILT SANDPIPER (18), SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER (est. 30), LEAST SANDPIPER (2), BAIRD'S SANDPIPER (1), DUNLIN (18, at least, often with nice breeding plumage), and WILSON'S PHALAROPE (est. 30-35, in a variety of locations and a wide range of plumage). Always a highlight in our eyes is ROSEATE SPOONBILL (16). (Total shorebird species this site = 12.) Total shorebird species for today = 18.
