Woohoo! Turns out the only thing wrong was the horizontal output transistor 2SC5422. The new one runs quite cool for an RCA ;) The old one was burning up due to the failure mode - it didn't completely short. I could measure 1K ohm emitter - collector with my meter and at running voltage who knows... So with resistance present it just acted like a giant toaster! I'll add this to the database...
