  He's got to save the .max file as a jpg file with the same scanning program.
.max files are fairly exotic, it is better not to use them, I am afraid 
only ONE
graphic problem is able to deal with them...though Photoshop might open them,
not sure..
You don't need to create a .pdf from a scan, a plain jpg is smaller and can
be opened by ANY graphics program
