Hollis, If I understand your question correctly, the answer is in the EEPROM. I have in times past temporarily installed a wrong EEPROM in a 175/177 chassis for testing purposes when I didn't have the right one in stock. It will work, but the menu may be different--it may show more or less features than normal. According to my records, all CTC185's use the RCA 233181 EEPROM.
