They are rated in AC volts, joules, and number of times they can withstand
absorbing that number of joules. You buy the highest number of joules you
can afford that will fit in the space allotted. Or you can leave it out and
buy a seperate box with surge suppressors, noise filters, and fuses or
breakers.
