Jeff,
check for open startup resistor R1003 on the DVD power supply 330K ohms
1/2watt. fixed one yesterday PVDM2792
also seen this:
 PV-DM2799 TV/VCR/DVD Combo
No Sound, No DVD operation
Replace shorted D1508 in DVD power supply #AG01Z/ECG587
