I was curious about this too, because of all the hype going
around.
I'm 65 now and I've been soldering since I first started working
on radios when I was about 10.
So, about 6 years ago when I was having a physical, my doc was
drawing blood and I asked him if he could have it checked for
lead. He wanted to know why I wanted to know. He has known me for
years and knows what I do for work, yet he seemed surprised that I
wanted the test done.

I told him that with all the media hype, I was curious, since I
have been handling solder for so many years and breathing the
fumes. I explained that I have had my fingers coated with dark
stuff, presumably lead, many times over the years after making a
portable solder roll to carry in the tube caddy by wrapping solder
around the shaft of a Phillips screwdriver to form a coil of
several layers. Also while soldering with the iron in one hand and
the roll in the other, if I need more solder from the roll, I grab
it with my teeth and pull.

He said I had nothing to worry about, but he would have the test
done to make me happy.

He told me you don't get lead poisoning from handling it, nor do
you get it from swallowing it or breathing the fumes. But if I was
still concerned, I could take a teaspoon of Geritol every day, as
the naturally occurring iron in the blood prevents it from
absorbing lead.

I guess the joke about getting a severe case of lead poisoning
from the old .44 may be the most reliable method.

My doc called a week or so later with the results of the blood
test.
I'm lead free.
