No DVD expert but I did have a Kenwood DVD player that displayed "hello" and wouldn't do much else. Problem was the 27 Mhz crystal on the micro controller board. As soon as I touched the crystal lead with my frequency counter probe, the unit started functioning properly, then intermittant after that until I replaced the crystal.
