I turned the set on and got HV with sound--"sounded" odd to me so I
quickly turned it off and found the HOT shorted and the fuse black.

Kevin,

As I tried to tell you in my previous post.  That cap determines the
high
voltage output by the flyback.  It goes too high and shorts the HOT. 
BTW, I think you meant "cause the HOT to short immediately after turning
the set  ON.
