I know that the Champlins were taking video of our matches. I'm sure they have some good clips. I have a HS sponsor who would like to see some video footage of us deploying our Mini-bot. If anyone has this type of footage please send a file to me. I would ask Joanna but I'm pretty sure she sticks to still photography. Doug From: Lesko, Kenneth R HS Sent: Monday, May 02, 2011 10:50 AM To: rockford.robotics.2039@xxxxxxxxx Cc: Webber, Will HS; 'Adam Czerwonka'; 'Mary Johnson' Subject: RE: News from Rockford Robotics -- May 2, 2011 Team Sponsors: My Editorial on US FIRST Robotics Competition Nationals held in Saint Louis, MO last week: In talking with Will Webber I heard our win/lost record for the 10 heat matches was 8/2 and that put us at 12th out of 88 teams in our division. With the first 8 teams picking their 2 alliance partners that put us 4th on the list of 80 teams to be picked from. It is unbelievable that out of the 16 teams selected by the top 8, Rockford Robotics did not get selected as an alliance partner. But "go figure" like any other sport, "the best team doesn't always win". Whether the other teams scouting didn't have us standing out as a top candidate, or we didn't market ourselves well enough to the other teams or other politics resulted in this misfortune; the team still did a bang up job at Nationals. Just to say, our mini-bot scored every time we attempted to deploy it, is a feat in itself. The improvements the team made took the robot to the next plateau from where we were at during the Milwaukee Regional's. Great job Rockford Robotics. P.S. Sorry if some of you HS sponsors get this twice, but we have been having firewall problems again, so to insure you're getting the Nationals report I've sent to your individual addresses. At the national competition, teams are randomly assigned to one of four divisions: Archemedes, Curie, Galileo, and Newton. The winners of each division then battle each other for the National Championship. When we competed at the Wisconsin Regional, our Drivers could direct our robot, "Loki" to transport transport tubes across the field and place them on the pegs. However our autonomous mode was not functioning and we could not consistently launch our mini-bot. During the following six weeks we redesigned our mini-bot and optimized our launching system. At the national competition, our autonomous mode worked consistently and our mini-bot was racing up the pole in less than three seconds. In fact, the mini-bot scored every time it was deployed. While we were seeded at fifty-five for our division, by the end of the ten qualifying matches, we were ranked twelve in the field of eight-eight. Though we did not make it to the finals, we are proud of "Loki" and how the team worked together to during this year's build and competition seasons. The grant was based on a written application as well as a presentation to the In Youth We Trust Advisory Council. The team will use these funds to sponsor workshops in which students can visit our build site and participate in hands on robot building projects. Our first workshop is scheduled for May 18. We expect about 75 students from Eisenhower Middle School to attend.
