I'm sure you will all be delighted to read the following sentence from a
letter sent to Chief Executives by the Department for Communities and Local
Government in May entitled DELETING NINE BEST VALUE PERFORMANCE INDICATORS
FOR 2007 - 08. (Thanks to Tony Sharp for passing it on)

"The power to set BVPIs will be abolished by a clause in the Local
Government & Public Involvement in Health Bill which is currently going
through Parliament. Therefore, 2007 - 08 will be the last year of BVPIs."

This will be an especial pleasure for those of you who have done a lot of
work to address the indicator and set up processes to measure it into the
future.

Now is the time to start lobbying to make sure that if anything similar
survives the abolition of the current set of up to 1200 indicators and their
replacement by a new "single set of around 200 against which all areas will
report and which will be designed to measure progress against national
priority outcomes" then it is a bit more sensible than BV165 (RIP). We will
talk about this at the TSG committee meeting next week.
