The new Germanic single light source products are currently being offered a= t the same price as the existing LEDs, although a "single source" tells me = that they are expecting prices to fall as production and customer take up i= ncreases. The situation was likened to buying a large plasma TV last year and buying = the same product in two years time. As the fau=3D lt could only be cured by replacing the driver equipment which is not che=3D ap and so, puts the maintenance cost way above that for normal lamps. I =3D am questioning the current state of this technology.=3D20 I monitored energy at the LED site and an identical site elsewhere (both =3D have T200 controllers, an OTU and 8 heads with no dimming) by fitting ele=3D ctricity meters. In the 19 months from March 2003, the LED site used 218=3D 1kw, whereas the non-LED site used 2591, a difference of around 16%. Howe=3D ver, bearing in mind the initial cost and the three repairs, the costs fa=3D r out way any possibility of savings. On a brighter note, I understand that a new 'single source' LED head is b=3D eing developed in the BLUE corner (hope I got that right - adjacent to th=3D e deep blue sea... or pool!), which promises to be much cheaper to buy an=3D d more reliable and I intend to try these as soon as possible. I've not y=3D et heard of any long term successful trials with first generation LED hea=3D ds.
