A cut down version of an Abacus Lighting medium or Heavy Duty =
hydraulicly operated raise and lower column would suffice. Ive not got =
any at the moment, although three schemes have been designed with these =
types of pole where required and should be installed by the end of the =
year.

When you say raise and lower poles are specified can you tell me what
you are using? We've started to use NAL sockets /poles but thus far
their hoist system has not been perfected.

Thanks

Julian,

on new sites which are difficult to access with ladders (and for tall =
=3D3D
poles) Im specifying raise-and-lower poles, so that the Engineer can =
=3D3D
access all the equipment at ground level without the need for access =
=3D3D
towers or TM and the like.=3D3D20

Even though our specification also calls for LED signal heads there will
=3D3D come a point where the Engineer needs to access the head so it =
makes =3D3D
sense to make such access as easy - and as safe - as possible.

Subject: [TCUG] Bulk Lamp Change and TM

I hope someone can come up with some useful suggestions or solutions to
=3D3D help with an issue.

Our maintenance contractor is due to commence the bi-annual bulk lamp
changing shortly and has identified some sites on dual carriageways =
=3D3D
where signal heads are located on very narrow central reserves. As a
result I =3D3D am currently faced with providing lane closures on both
approaches in lane =3D3D 2 to enable the 'A' frame ladders to be =
erected,
secured to the pole and =3D3D these lamps to be replaced. As an =
consequence,
there will also be a =3D3D requirement for lane closures for pedestrian
heads on the nearside where these =3D3D aspects cannot be reached from
anywhere except with the ladders located in the carriageway.=3D3D20

Many of the routes are in areas with speed limits higher than 40mph and
=3D3D as such the TM requirements as considerable and we are currently
looking at various options including deploying a crash cushion behind
the operative =3D3D and operating as a short duration works where the =
speed
limits permit. =3D3D Another option suggested is to force the junction =
to
All Red and undertake the operation with the junction held in this state
for short durations.=3D3D20

The current site specific risk assessments had not identified this =3D3D
however the contractor's revised method statement makes this a
requirement. New =3D3D site specific risk assessments will be undertaken
however options are =3D3D invited. =3D3D20 The option of upgrading =
everything
to LED and removing the need for lamp changing is economically difficult
and current reliability issues of LED heads may prevent this option.
That said the conversion to near sided pedestrian signals would remove
some of the problem. =3D3D20 This issue has raised other questions
regarding whether the maintenance engineer is able to undertake any
repairs without TM being available if required which may require
delaying the correction of faults.

Does anyone have any ideas to offer? =3D3D20
