thanks again guys,
I ended up calling one of the local vw shops before heading out to weatherford
where the bus is.  yes I could get the fan off after pulling two pieces of tin.
Probably could have done it with the tin on but was easier getting bolts
torqued again with tin off.  I was not able to cure the problem.  I switched
and rearranged spacers and fans.  No combination could give good clearance for
the fan.  My thinking is that maybe both spacers have worn and a new spacer may
be in order.  this being my 914 type IV and thinking most my local part carry
type I parts, I started by calling a local porsche parts/repair place I use.
He did not have the part but could order it for me. Okay, how much?  "Well,
the part is about $5 but our minimum order is $250 so unless you want about
10-12 of them, I can't order it"   We both just cracked up!  He said he places
a couple of orders a week and can tag it on and get it to me in about a week.
 I said cool, I'll
 wait.
one thing he did tell me is that besides the spacer, there is a washer behind
the fan.  That could supply the clearance I'm needing.  Now neither of my
motors had a washer.  It went hub, spacer, fan bolted up by 3 bolts.  my Haynes
manual for the 914 doesn't show a washer.  Any you guys know anything about a
washer?

Not sure what year your Bus is but I seem to remember replacing the fan and oil
pump without pulling the motor...

Doesn't tilt far enough unless you also remove the transaxle rear mount bolts.
Just like if you're going to pull the motor all the way out. The transaxle has
to tilt down too.

Forking U.S. safety specs that got the removable rear valance deleted from the
build specs.
