Jeff: He built the engine. I told him when I had it built I wanted the best
running VW engine he could build that had stock bore and stroke and that would
run 100,000 miles. It has an AS41 case, stock bore stroke, Engle 110 cam, CB
044 heads and I was running it with a 009 and 34 Webers. It ran like a champ
in the baja and I never had a moments problem with it and it has just about
40,000 miles on it. I only replaced it because it did not have quite enough
power to pull the Baja at cruising speeds in 4th gear. Baja has huge rear
tires and horrible areodynamics. But it would run about 80 in 4th with this
engine. I replaced it with a 2007cc stroker motor that is putting out over 100
hp and it acts like it would run about 100mph in 4th as long as I'm not bucking
a headwind. I've had it up to 90 and it had a lot left. Lyle does good work
and has a strong reputation for building VW racing engines.

Like a lot of us he is getting older and is sometimes difficult to get
anything out of time wise. He did really good on the engine about 4 years ago
when he built it but then later I had him build me a tranny and it took him
about 4 months. But his work is tops.

Oak Hill Auto in Longview built me the stroker motor and they also do really
good work and have built many of these 2007 engines, but they are running a
3-4month backlog on engine orders.

Sammie--I want to know more about this Lyle Cherry engine. I talked to
you briefly at Psycoblooie about it. Did you buy it complete from Lyle or did
he do an engine rebuild?

I found this interesting article. http://oldeskool.org/empi.html

It mentions Lyle Cherry at the end.

Would entertain offers as is without Lyle Cherry engine installed but would
include the engine uninstalled for around $7,500.

New project is to get the 51 split engine installed and get it out of my
driveway. Has been sitting in my drive way under a cover since I started the
Bakery Bus. Remove old engine: done. Clean up engine compartment and
replace/renew old wiring and do some body work on the rear, in process. The PO
thought he was doing a great thing when he coated the inside of the entire
engine compartment with spray-on bed liner. Ugh, ever tried to remove this
stuff! Only thing I have been able to come up with is a lot of scraping. Got
most of it done. When engine compartment is clean and body work and wiring
done it gets the Lyle Cherry engine that was in the Baja. And it will be for
sale if anyone knows anyone looking for a cal-look standard split on a 65
chasis. Would sell as is if anyone wants to come up with the money now.
