I think that the core of the VW people I know are getting older. They don't
travel like we used to, the economy is always kicking our asses one way or
another. Good jobs that require more time, bad jobs, no jobs. Family, new
babies, crazy relatives, obligations. No money, tight money. Bad health,
(falling down).

I plan on doing Psychblooie again and I know that I will fall into a funk a
week before because I will hear every one of those stories and more.

I simply can't do all the shows I want to. Somehow, at 58, I suddenly have
more responsibilities and less money. How the hell did that happen? I really
wanted to go to Sammy's show, But all the Gods conspired against it and
blowing a big wad on the Galveston trip was part of the problem. There is a
good example; if I had not gone to Galveston, I could have gone to Nac.
There was a time I would have done both. Not anymore.

I will have to be way closer to death than I have been to miss the Classic
or T@P. I live right by Eureka, so that's a given. There a very good shows
in Tulsa and Springfield, MO, and BNNTA (a must for anybody who likes
camping) the weekend after Eureka are don't miss for me.

Well, there's my rant. Gotta go, camping this weekend.

I for one am very sad to see Ennis go away, it was the premier show when I
first got a VW. But as Sammie said it is a simple law of `supply & demand'
if you don't go and support your hobby it will go away. It is not an easy
task to put on a show whether it be a small show or large, for fun or profit
or anywhere in between. Sometimes it is not the best conditions; Ennis is
hot but it's a Volkswagen show. I sweat like a pig driving my bus but it's
still COOL. It cost a lot of money but I spend more than that on beer every
weekend (OK, I don't but some of you do). It's a long drive, yeah that's the
fun of it. Try putting on a show that is a 6 hr drive from home. I don't
remember the trips that were easy and went smooth but I'll never forget
blowing an engine at exit 13 in Mississippi coming back from Florida (and I
suspect that Dennis & Chuck won't forget that they had to re-route to rescue
my bus) or changing the clutch out in the motel parking lot in Colorado.
Almost every show I go to I try to encourage others to join me and make a
big showing from our group. I agree with most of the complaints about Ennis
but it's still a VW show and we need all we can get. Sometimes that nasty
four letter word (work) gets in my way but we just need to do the best we
can and support all VW shows and the sponsors that make them possible.

The one time I showed up early (8?) at Ennis (after a 3 hour drive), all the
good stuff had already been bought and everybody I asked said, "it's sold".
The second time I showed up, there wasn't squat in the first place.

No camping, they charged too much to enter, the parking was too far away
from everything, it gets really hot or too windy on the pavement.... It's
just a crappy show location in my opinion.

Temple HEB Octoberfest Show was probably the best show I've been to. The
Volkslennium show was fun. My life has never cooperated for me to
consistently get to any one show. I'm sad I'll miss the Classic this year.
Hopefully its not the last one, but had some fond (and not-so-fond) memories
there if it is. And T&P has been cool and hopefully I can make it with a
bus.

I appreciate the free shows. I put one on myself and it was a lot of fun.
The Red Shed Tavern in Way-South Austin announced a free VW show 5/1 2-6PM.

I got completely turned off by the Ennis shows years ago. I don't know what
specific items irritated me, but I just never felt welcomed. The best shows
are personal affairs. The people who put the shows on are part of a
community and a circle of friends. Sammy is the Nac show, Steve and Sharon
are Fredericksburg, Paul is T@P. I never felt any of that with Ennis.

Some times it's hard to make allot of out of town shows. I have to choose
3-4 out of town shows a year myself and T@P, The Tx Classic and Psycoblooie
usually top my list.
I think allot of the blame has to be put on the track, show personal and the
racing people. The last couple of years we have given them suggestions on
making the shows in Ennis better and it wasn't
until the the last show they tried to make the show part better with
camping, event's etc. The track only cared about the racing and the racing
folks split themselves between 2 tracks the last show.
They even scheduled one show the same day as T@P so they missed having all
the buses there. Plus the track people are just mean and nasty and acted
like they were doing us a favor taking our money.
I still managed to make most of them in Ennis.

I think support works both ways and there has not been much either way.

As of right now it does not look there will be any more. Last word I had
was that Warren might be working on something for October but doubtful.

When you don't get support for the events they will stop. I probably put
more miles traveling to VW events on vehicles than just about anyone. And I
see lots of VW people who simply will not go further than their home town to
an event. The last 3 or 4 Ennis events only had about 50 cars showing up
and entering the show (most from the DFW area) and the last event only drew
about 10 entries for the drags. That will not support an event. We lost
the venue of the greatest swap around and the ability to watch VW only drags
for the most part, simply because people would not support the event.

I know the Texas people are out there: I saw 150+cars at both the
Monumental Bug Bash and the Ft Worth Club stampede last year as well as 350
or so at the Texas Classic.

I went to the Manassas Virginia Bug In last year and found a location much
worse than Ennis with organization that was not nearly as good, spectators
could not even get in with a car. If you had a VW you could enter and drive
in. If you didn't have a VW you parked in a field well away from the show
and walked. The drag track and the show facility looked as if they had been
built in 1955 and not improved since. They had a huge swap and 650 cars
entered in the show; as well as a large drag turnout. Go figure.

I know there few people on the list that are more in the know than me so
I'll ask. Is there anymore shows in Ennis?
I had heard rumors that because of the poor showing lately there may not be
anymore.

Inquiring minds want to know.
