I'll have to look at all of the ratios: But, off the top of my head all of the split cases in the 36 had a 4.37 R&P and all of the early tunnel cases also had a 4.37. The other gears I'll have to look. To my knowledge (at least from like 54 to the end of the German production) VW only put three R&Ps in the tranny. 4.37 up to 65 or 66, then 4.11, then 3.88 when the single side plate came out in like 73 or 74.

Its all in the tranny gearing. Those old split case trannys had a different
gear ratio than the ones in front of the 40hp.
I used to drive my '59 vert back and forth from Colo Spgs to Denver. It
would bog down a little going up the hills but could bury the speedo needle
coming back down.

Well Will; technically the 40 bastard is really only 36 according to the
manual. But, the original bastard was replaced with a factory replacement
40, so I guess it really is 40. But, in the old days of drag racing in a
Type I, a 36 horse would outrun, barely, a 40 horse in a quarter mile. The
40 would out top end the 36 slightly, but the 36 had slightly better
acceleration for some reason. Have to take my word for it cause there
ain't no more bone stock untouched 36 and 40 horse from the factory engines
around anymore.
