qwerty keypads on phones are a matter of personal preference. Some people
think them stupid, some people think them brilliant. Personally I don't like
them as I find I can type faster just using the numbers, whereas others say
they type faster using the qwerty method. So it's down to the individual
stupid or otherwise!

I have the e71 for about 3 days now. Just liked it when I saw it in the
shop and hoped for the best. When it arrived on Monday I was not at all
sure. Now and even Monday evening I was absolutely delighted with it. Not
so sure I would go along with what Mat Brown says about the keyboard being
'stupid' just Math's turn of phraise. It is true it does not have the exact
layhout as your large desktop conventional qwerty keyboard but let's face
it, it does a brilliant job. I am not totally familiar with it as yet but
if there is anything tedious then it is the fact that one has to press the
Function key and then the number which you want to put in the text box or
whatever. The punctuation keys are a little bit all over the place but at
least the main ones, , . ; are grouped together and the / and @ signs are
again toggled key, 3rd key in on the left bottom row. There is a key which
when I hit it, it says Edit, which is a nonsense as the function it carries
out is to produce an Initial Caps. If pressed again the Edit key will
repeat the word Edit and this time it is ALL CAPS. Why the spacebar has to
be so large I am not sure. Oh yes the backspace key is in a silly place on
the right, I remember it as 3rd up on the right. All a matter of getting
used to. Personally I found the best way to get to know the keyboard was to
go in to Talks training mode and play around. After that I spent time in a
word document writing anything at all and just getting used to the keyboard
layout. I am sure all of you word processors and partickularly you typists
are used to the good old sentence for inclusion of all the 26 letters of the
alphabet and just to refresh your minds it is. The little brown fox jujps
quickly over the lazy dog. Writing this over and over again familiarised me
with the layout. then I began to introduce the punctuation, correct errors
etc. Now it is just a matter of gaining speed and profecikency.

Hi

Can you please clarify your statement about the E71 keyboard being
"completely stupid"? I am interested In getting it and am now a little
concerned. Did you ever look at the E61 keyboard? If you did, what did you
think of it?

Kind Regards

Subject: [talks-uk] N97 and N86?

Hi, I've just checked with T-mobile in the UK and they aren't going to be
getting the N86 sadly. It also doesn't look as if they'll be getting the
N97.

I still can't decide which phone to get! Someone said that the N85 is also
compatible with Talks but it isn't in the list of phones published by
Nuance.

I only hope the N86 will be because the list of accessible phones that are
new or current is getting thinner, has anyone else noticed that? I know
Nokia are bringing out more touch-screen phones, and obviously they're out
for us, but there isn't really a sensible alternative to Talks on a Nokia.
The Windows based phones crash all the time, and the Mobile Speak system
isn't the best in the World, what are we going to do?

I hear that the N97 is unlikely to be supported by Nuance because it
integrates a touch screen as well, but according to Nokia the phone is
completely accessible via the qwerty keyboard so the touch screen isn't
necessary. I wonder if Nuance will rethink that one.

Just interested in what other people think. I had a look at the E71 and
absolutely hate it! The keyboard on it is completely stupid!

Matt
