Good morning,
In 2016, the Florida ABLE (Achieving a Better Life Experience) Program will
offer savings accounts to individuals with disabilities. These tax-free
accounts can be used to save for disability-related expenditures without
jeopardizing the eligibility for Supplemental Security Income, Social Security
Disability Insurance and Medicaid benefits.
Florida ABLE was signed into law in December 2014 and allows individuals with
disabilities and their families access to savings and investment options, which
is similar to a college savings account. The purpose of an ABLE account is to
encourage and assist individuals and families to save private funds for the
purpose of supporting individuals with disabilities to maintain health,
independence and quality of life.
As the program is being built, it is imperative that the needs of the target
audience are being represented.
