Throughout history many otherwise intelligent people have been mislead by the
ideals and false promises of socialism, but the fact is that it has always,
without exception, failed. In places like Sweden it may have appeared to work
initially but that was only because it started from a booming capitalist
economy and it takes time for the corruption to work its way through the system
and ultimately destroy it.
The book Pilgrim's Progress tells the history of the first American colony
which was a socialist experiment. It began as a commune where all the work and
resources were shared. Half the people died from starvation during the first
two years. It was only after the land was divided into individual plots and
money was introduced did the colony not only succeed but prosper. This was how
what began as a socialist experiment became the center of free market
capitalism.
Communism is rooted in the idea of collectivism, which is the idea that the
needs of the many outweigh the needs of the individual. Collectivism can only
work when individuals feel that they are a part of something larger than
themselves, e.g. giving one's life for God and country. It's no different than
any other religion. Believers like Stan will continue to believe in spite of
any evidence to the contrary, just as some people believe that Jesus walked on
water, turned water into wine and rose from the dead. Stan's mind is made up
and is never going to change because his opinions are not based on logic.

Just saw the movie where intelligent, creative American Communists are shown as
patriotic
heroes fighting to uphold our Constitution. Dalton Trumbo a top Hollywood
screen writer and
9 other screen writers (referred to as the Hollywood ten) defied Senator Joe
McCarthy and
the House Un American Activities Committee and went to jail sticking to their
principals.
Proud to report I too was among hundreds, perhaps thousands that was also
brought before
that shameful committee.
Trumbo was black listed but was given screen writing jobs anyway under fiction
names and
two of his productions, Spartacus and another picture about a Mexican kid and
his pet fighting
bull won Oscars. Eventually an actor and director insisted that his true name
be listed on the
credits.
My observation when I was in the communist party was that members came from all
walks of life
and included Intellectuals, Doctors, Lawyers, Engineers, Teachers, etc as well
as ordinary workers.
