EveryoneJust saw the movie where intelligent, creative American Communists are
shown as patrioticheroes fighting to uphold our Constitution. Dalton Trumbo a
top Hollywood screen writer and9 other screen writers (referred to as the
Hollywood ten) defied Senator Joe McCarthy andthe House Un American Activities
Committee and went to jail sticking to their principals. Proud to report I too
was among hundreds, perhaps thousands that was also brought beforethat shameful
committee. Trumbo was black listed but was given screen writing jobs anyway
under fiction names andtwo of his productions, Spartacus and another picture
about a Mexican kid and his pet fightingbull won Oscars. Eventually an actor
and director insisted that his true name be listed on thecredits. My
observation when I was in the communist party was that members came from all
walks of lifeand included Intellectuals, Doctors, Lawyers, Engineers, Teachers,
etc as well as ordinary workers. Stanley, socialist and ex proud communist
