WikiArt: Visual Art Encyclopedia
Today's site offers a splendid, non-profit undertaking to make available a
comprehensive collection of artwork. Gentle Subscribers will discover an
extensive archive of culturally important art, from both the public domain and
those held within copyright -- the latter under the fair use principle.
"The project aims to create high-quality, most complete and well-structured
online repository of fine art. We hope to make classical art a little more
accessible and comprehensible, and also want to provide a new form of
interaction between contemporary artists and their audience. In the future we
plan to cover the entire history of art -- from cave artworks to the new
talents of today. ... WikiArt filling system is based on the principle of
wiki, i.e. free filling and editing the contents of the site by anyone who
wants to participate in the project. The quality and reliability of the

This valuable resource comprises artworks from an extensive and encompassing
range. The collection can be searched by keyword or browsed in a variety of
ways, by Artist -- through an alphabetized database, or by art movement, genre,
or nationality among other criteria or by the Artworks themselves -- for
example, by style, technique, and popularity. Pertinent details about each are
provided, including provenance where available, information about the painting,
its origin and current location. When an individual painting is selected, the
artist's work is automatically sorted by year. and can easily be enlarged. In
addition, simple mouseovers display the title of each item in the archive.
