Opera's Chrome Extension: Software of the Month
The sobriquet as the most overlooked browser, despite its many features, seems
to have dogged Opera almost since its launch. As has become increasingly
obvious in recent years, a browser often lives or dies because of its
extensions or third party customizations, which also tends to explain the
tenacity with which users will cling to an outdated version of their browser --
the fear that an essential add-on will no longer work.
As with most browsers, virtually all graphical operating systems are compatible
with Opera.
The dearth of extensions for Opera may be one of the reasons why it has
continued to lag in popularity, while newcomers such as Chrome, with its
thousands of add-ons, have become the browser of choice for many.
With a single extension, however, Opera users have access to the thousands of
add-ons available for Chrome. Simply titled as Chrome Extension, this Opera
add-on makes the dizzying array of Chrome extensions viable options for the
browser. A trip to the Chrome Web Store after having installed Chrome
Extension to Opera will add a happy little "+Add To Opera" tab beside each
extension; installing a new Chrome extension is as simple and easy as it is
with Chrome itself. While Themes and Apps are not included for obvious
compatibility reasons, Extensions suffer from no such limitations and are
generally readily obtainable.
Those who have never considered taking a look at Opera as a viable alternative
in the browser battles may now dip a toe in the water and check it out. (Like
any browser worth its salt, the installation is laughably simple, although it's
prudent to take a look at the small Options tab prior to the install.) For
anyone who has had Opera sitting on a back burner, it might be time to dust it
off and stir it up with Chrome Extension to bring it to a new state of
viability.
