FiveThirtyEight's Final Oscar Picks
Today's site from the Culture section of notable statistician, author, and
journalist Nate Silver's publication, zeros in on the most likely winners of
the 2016 Oscars. Gentle Subscribers may find the conclusions reached
sufficiently predictive to engage in a few small wagers over the Oscar weekend.
"After ... [the] International Press Academy awards — commonly referred to as
the Satellites — the FiveThirtyEight model tracking the Oscar race has its
final data, and we can definitively talk about the state of the race for
Sunday's Academy Awards." - from the website
The heart of this feature is tucked into the unassuming headline, Montage of
Oscar Candidates. Leading to the nuts and bolts charts of the major Oscar
categories, from Best Supporting Actress to Picture of the Year, the data is
displayed on easy to follow graphs. Based on how the nominees fared at other
major awards, points are assigned and contenders are ranked. Freely admitting
that the results do not rest on the rigorous data collection and mathematical
somersaults directed towards political campaigns, the report nevertheless
highlights the likely trends in the Oscar selection. The main article offers
video clips of the big players from other awards shows, along with explanations
for the predictions in each major category.
