Today's site, originally created by "software entrepreneur" Jim Zuber, provides
useful information about hiking trials in virtually every region of the country.
Gentle Subscribers with New Year's resolutions involving more active pursuits on
their agendas, may find this helpful guide opening previously overlooked
opportunities for exploring the natural landscape close to home.
"The Localhikes web site provides information on local hiking opportunities near
both large and small metropolitan areas in the United States. You can find the
perfect trail by selecting your metro area to browse the available hikes, or by
using the search feature to find the trails closest to your home or office. The
hikes on this site were contributed by volunteer LocalHikes reporters from
around
the country." - from the website
The home page lists a browsable selection of metropolitan areas in the U.S. but
there are some notable absences -- for example the "Garden State" of New
Jersey. By
entering the zip code in the appropriate slot, a list of trails, with their
distances from the zip code location becomes available. From there, it's but a
hop
away from detailed information about the area's hiking paths -- which generally
include topographic maps, elevation charts, details about the trail, including
the
type and distance, hike time, how to get there and reviews from those who have
walked it. In many cases, there are enticing photos highlighting the spectacular
beauty of the hike.
